To bridge the knowledge gap for visitors, we designed scenes and settings that would be familiar to them. For example, the entrance to the gallery would replicate the look and feel of a runway. When visitors first enter the space, they will step on ‘tarmac’ and hear the faint roar of engines and the sound of aircraft taking off. These sights and sounds will provide a welcoming introduction, building anticipation even before visitors begin exploring the showcase of the broader aviation industry.
We planned the experience around six different stages of a flight passenger’s journey. The six zones were named: Welcome Aboard; Bon Voyage; Taking Off; In Full Flight; Arrival; and New Frontiers. These names made the space feel fun and relatable. But more importantly, each zone conveyed a critical message and takeaway for visitors.
A significant portion of the planned gallery was devoted to showcasing the maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facility to raise the awareness of this sector and to address its urgent manpower needs. To highlight the crucial roles within the MRO sector, we emphasised D-checks – the most comprehensive and thorough inspections performed on aircraft. By creating an installation featuring life-sized models of key aircraft components, we would have a compelling visual to convey the meticulous attention to detail involved during such inspections. The display would enhance visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the crucial roles and expertise of MRO technicians and specialists in ensuring passenger safety.
To elevate visitor engagement and leave a lasting impression, we included vending machines that dispensed occupation-themed keychain mementos. This would not only pique visitor interest but also promote awareness of different careers within the aviation industry. Aside from enriching visitor experience, this would provide CAAS with invaluable data and insights into occupational preferences, and inform future engagement strategies effectively.
